BATELEUR

by

Craig Doria

When professional hunter Nicholas Hartmann discovers a poached elephant deep in the African wilderness—far from the reaches of the average safari tourist—he is drawn into the dark underworld of the illegal ivory trade and terrorism. As he pursues a mysterious middleman across mainland and coastal East Africa, Nicholas becomes trapped in a labyrinth of deceit, corruption, and uncertain loyalties.

BATELEUR takes the reader far from sanitized portrayals of Africa’s iconic wildlife and exposes the heavy price it pays at the hands of greed and fanaticism. It is a stark reminder of the fragile beauty of the last wild places and the increasing imperative to preserve them.

“Utterly authentic. Craig Doria has seen it all. His descriptions of Africa are deeply felt, and so vivid you smell the dust, feel the leg-weariness, and endure the sapping heat. The heartbreak and despair that beat at the heart of this brave first novel lend gravitas to a story that grips until the final sentence.”

— David Lambkin, award-winning author of Whisper of Death

“A brilliant debut, engaging, cerebral, and highly evocative of East Africa.”

— Seán Hemingway, author of The Tomb of Alexander
